Amsterdam

July 16, 2014

Today Joe departed via Schiphol Airport for a week and half long work trip back to Seattle. Jackie took full advantage of the sunny day in Amsterdam exploring Jordaan and Oude West.
Arched windows & shutters
Westerkerk on Prinsengracht

Houseboats covered in flowers
Not even open until 10am and already the line into Anne Frank’s House wrapped around Westerker at least 200 people deep.
I love the curved red shuttered homes

Dutch life: bicycles, canals & houseboats
Huis van Bartolotti (Bartolotti House) where the façade curves with the canal
Hotel building curving along Raadhuisstraat

Magna Plaza shopping center

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal
De Niewe Kerk

De Niewe Kerk is used by the Dutch royal family for coronations and weddings. The space is now used as an exhibition space, but I was able to see a bit from the museum store and observation deck without paying the entry fee.

Golden choir gate in De Niewe Kerk
Wooden pulpit in De Niewe Kerk

Royal Palace of Amsterdam
Dam Square
Grimburgwal & Oudezijds Voorburgwal
Café de Jaren has great patio seating along the canals. Jackie enjoyed a kip (chicken) ciabetta sandwich with a knife and fork, the way the Dutch eat sandwiches.

Canal house views near the café
Amstel River & Rokin canals
Rokin canal & buildings that are part of the Universitiet van Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam)
Munttoren (mint tower) on busy Muntplein square where the Amstel River and Singel canal meet near the flower market on the eastern end of Kalverstraat shopping street.
Flower Market where you can buy 30 tulip bulbs for 10!

Cool corner building
Amsterdam canal houses
Yellow bicycle on flower basket canal bridge railings
