Cihu, Shihmen Reservoir & Hsinchu, Taiwan

Tuesday January 10, 2012

On our walk to the metro station this morning we passed our favorite strange translation sign. Joe is embarrassed to call them his people.
From Taipei Main Station we took the local train to Hsinchu with Dad.

A taxi driver friend drove the 3 of us and Joe's Mom's sister to Shihmen Reservoir. As we drove by Daxi, I told Joe we went there 2 years ago.

We stopped at Cihu, Chiang Kai Chek's mausoleum and sculpture park. Even though we were here 2 years ago you can't keep Joe's Dad away from here when we were this close. He's like a second father to the man. We got there just at the right time, as the changing of the guard was occurring.

The national flower was in bloom during this visit.
The Shimen Reservoir was built in 1964 during Chiang Kai Chek’s presidency. It is the largest body of water in the north and popular for its beautiful dark-green hills and green-blue water surrounded by numerous scenic pavilions and well-laid-out parks.

Joe and I climbed up to a lookout for a better view.

We could see Daxi in the distance, which we visited 2 years ago. It now is so much clearer why the riverbed was so barren. This is a massive dam.

We could see the huge dam. Dam!

More views of the reservoir from the roadway over the dam.

Cool building at overlook.

Here is a more close-up view of the dam spillway.
The dam manages water levels significantly during floods that would frequently from tsunamis.
We then went to the Fangliao Yimin Temple. It was really nice to hear Joe translate to me that his aunt really likes to come here and look at all the detail in the building.

Joe decided to ride a deer.
We walked across a suspension bridge.

Joe’s aunt then took us to an overlook in Hsinchu. It was REALLY windy and without the coffee place open, she took us to another overlook spot to watch the sun set.
We warmed up with a cappuccino overlooking Hsinchu at sunset.

This is a cool pedestrian bridge we will go drive-by later.
Here is a close-up of the pedestrian bridge shortly after we drove under it in downtown Hsinchu.
We spent the night at a hotel just outside Hsinchu near Joe’s aunt’s house. It was actually kinda nice. 4 post bed with canopy, shower with a seat and a jacuzzi tub! And condoms in numberous places? That was a little odd….is this a rent by the hour motel?
